East Village is east of Greenwich Village, south of Gramercy, and north of the Lower East Side. The neighborhoods include Alphabet City, which are streets named A-D. East Village got its name in the 1960’s when beatniks, hippies, musicians, and artists congregated in the area, and the name was adopted as a means to differentiate this area from the Lower East Side. East Village is the setting for the musical Rent by Jonathan Larson. In the surrounding clubs, many artists got their start, such as New York Dolls, Patti Smith, Arto Lindsay, The Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads, The Plasmatics, Glenn Danzig, Sonic Youth, The Beastie Boys, Anthrax, and The Strokes. East Village also has St. Mark’s Place, a street of alternative retailers. St. Mark’s is depicted on the cover of Led Zellelin’s Physical Graffiti album, and it was also home to James Fenimore Cooper.
