Green in the City: Back to Nature in NYC
Union Square Greenmarket by x-eyedblonde via Flickr

Just because you are leaving behind the wide-open spaces of the suburbs or country does not mean your New York City Apartment cannot be eco-friendly and green! You can stay connected to nature while living in the “concrete jungle.” Here are some tips on how to get green and stay green!

Go Organic!

Many New York neighborhoods such as Morningside Heights, Murray Hill and Inwood host weekly farmers markets in the warmer months, and some of them year round. Greenmarkets, held at dozens of locations citywide on specific days, offer more than just veggies. At the Union Square Greenmarket (held every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, check out http://www.nyfarmersmarket.com/regionmetronewyork.htm for a full list of New York's neighborhood markets), you can find anything from specialty cheeses and local wines to gourmet cuts of meat and filets of fish. In addition there are many specialty and gourmet shops in Manhattan that offer organic fare, and even some convenience stores and delis carry basic organic products such as soymilk and specialty cereals. Going organic is a great way to detox your body from all the hustle and bustle of New York City!

Get some plants!

Sometimes in the city it can feel like trees are foreign objects and birds (besides pigeons of course) are just distant memories. Luckily you can create your own oasis just by adding plants and flowers to your apartment in New York. Studies have shown keeping house plants can help to decrease stress and elevate your mood. Some plants that do well in New York apartments with very little care are Fichus (which just needs to be placed near a window and watered), and the beautiful White Bird Of Paradise flower.

Compost!

Just because you don’t live surrounded by nature does not mean you can’t still help the environment. New Yorkers throw away a lot of degradable materials that can be composted and given to compost programs for community gardens and other beautification projects. For information on indoor composting, which is a fairly simple process, go to www.nyccompost.org.

Recycle!

New York City has a great recycling program. The department of sanitation has these nifty posters and stickers for garbage cans telling what to put in them as far as recycling and trash goes. Putting that milk carton in the recycling bin instead of the trash is an easy thing that can improve your environment and make you feel good!

Community Gardens

For those of us requiring an extra dose of nature, there are many community gardens where users can rent a small plot of mother earth to do what they will. There is a beautiful community garden near my apartment in Williamsburg, Brooklyn where one of the renters keeps amazing rosebushes. For a list of community gardens near your New York apartment, go to http://www.oasisnyc.net/gardens/resources.htm.

Hopefully these tips will help you keep a little green in your concrete dreams after you have moved into your No Fee Apartment in New York City!

NYRentClub is now matching NYC Renters to Qualified Moving Companies

New York City, N.Y., 30 January 2009--NYRentClub.com, the New York City-based real estate broker service which connects NYC renters to real estate brokers with expertise in luxury apartments in Manhattan, Chelsea, and The Village, among others, today announced its new partnership with 123Movers.com, a leading online moving portal and a division of Dominion Enterprises.

This partnership provides NYRentClub users the ability to obtain free, no-obligation moving quotes from moving companies who have been pre-screened for full compliance with State and Federal regulations and have the required insurance to perform moving services to our users.

“We are happy to announce our new partnership with 123Movers.com and to be able to provide another great free service to NYC renters through NYRentClub.com,” stated Matthew Day, President of NYRentClub.com.

About NYRentClub.com

NYRentClub.com is an online community of New Yorkers where members rate and review NYC rental brokers and receive personal matches to quality brokers who meet their specific criteria. NYRentClub's broker community guides renters to luxury apartments in whatever New York City neighborhood they prefer. There is no cost to the renters -- in fact renters receive a minimum 20% discount off their traditional broker fee. NYRentClub.com was conceived by President Matthew Day after he relocated from his native Australia to New York City in 2006 and saw firsthand the challenge of finding top service when searching for a New York rental property.

NYRentClub is an independent platform and lists agents from many of the top NYC firms. Any NYC agent can apply to join; however all agents must be pre-qualified with former client reference checks, and then agree to be rated and reviewed by NYRentClub members going forward.

In 5 minutes renters can choose the perfect rental agent and start saving their hard earned cash.
